Unless you're sailing in on your own yacht, the only real means to get to Anambas are by airplane and by ferry.
Even though plane tickets are obviously more costly than the tickets for the ferry, taking the ferry to Anambas is probably only advisable when you have a lot of spare time.
The sail to and fro tends to take about 8 hours per leg, but may end up taking more than 10 hours if and when things don't go according to script (Read: weather issues, technical issues).
Now, a 10 hour journey doesn't exactly sound horrid as such, particularly when you're an intrepid traveler used to venturing to a frontier neck of the woods kind of place like Anambas. However, it's good to note that the ferry to Anambas is getting somewhat long in the tooth and not really the most comfortable.
With that said, the ferry is a cheap option, so it may just be the "ticket" for backpackers and other budget travelers.
Meanwhile, couples and families are better off going to Anambas by plane. At just one hour, the flight isn't only a huge time-saver, but it's comfy and convenient too. And let's face it, the current plane ticket fares not exactly going to break the bank.
The Anambas airport is in Letung and you can fly to Letung from Batam, located just off Singapore, or from Jakarta. This flight operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Keep in mind though, that once you've landed in Anambas, you'll need to catch a taxi. After all, the airport is a ways off from the main village, Tarempa. Still, finding a taxi is easy, given that they will be standing by at the airport when the plane arrives.
By the way, taxis here are cheap. So this aspect of the plane ride shouldn't be a deal-breaker for most travelers.
